Gin and coconut water - ok just the water and jelly please!

The coconut industry has long been part of Trinidadian culture. Coconut vendors around the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port of Spain and other parts of the country always draw a crowd of tourists and locals alike enjoying the sweet taste. Visiting the coconut man has become part of a tradition.

The art of cutting open a coconut

There is a lot of debate as to the correct way to open a coconut. First, they will open a notch in the coconut and give you a straw to sip up the coconut water. Tip, coconut water mixes well with the local rum. After consuming the liquid, they will smash open the fruit and cut a little notch, so you can scrape up the jelly.

For the health conscious the benefits of drinking coconut water are many, with claims that it regulates blood pressure, helps with reducing weight, increases immunity, improves kidney function and helps with removing skin blemishes. Its natural flavour has no additives or sugary products. Because of all its natural benefits many demand the product, therefore the supply needs to be constant.
